Lehi, City at war over apartment project

For two years, residents of the Lehi community in northwest Mesa have been fighting against a modest 222-unit apartment complex proposed for McDowell Road and the Loop 202, saying it’s an “unjust intrusion of urban life.” The city’s Planning and Zoning Board denied it in 2021, but developers modified the project, including more horse-friendly roundabouts to address concerns. Now, it looks like the city will move ahead with rezoning and approval for the three-story complex. In a pleasant surprise, Mesa Councilman Mark Freeman, who represents the area serving Lehi, is even on board, saying apartments are better than other potential uses, such as RV storage.
