Tucson Reports Slow Progress for Housing Assistance

The 2023 Annual Report from the Tucson Department of Housing and Community Development sheds light on the persistent challenges the city faces in addressing the pressing need for housing assistance. Despite progress, with the City of Tucson transitioning more than 200 individuals from shelters to permanent housing—a notable increase compared to 2022—there remains a staggering demand for support. Over 20,000 people submitted applications for housing vouchers in 2023 alone. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Pima County requires over 26,000 additional units of affordable housing, yet the report reveals that only 1,200 units are currently in the planning stages within the city.
