Tempe plans to ban property owners from passing over tenants who use housing vouchers instead of providing incentives to those who do, which is a superior solution. The article inaccurately states there is a “fear among landlords that those who receive government handouts will make for poor tenants,” but the truth is that owners shy away from vouchers because it’s a complex, confusing and inefficient system. The article goes on to explain that even if Tempe passes the ban, property owners can “circumvent” it by choosing not to rent to people due to other concerns, such as a low credit score or previous eviction.
