Phoenix wants to add more housing, ‘basic amenities’ downtown

Phoenix is looking for developers to add housing and essential services like hardware stores and veterinarians at two city-owned parcels at First and McKinley streets. The projects proposed have to be at least 10 stories tall and include ground-floor retail, with 10 percent of apartments for low-income residents and 10 percent for moderate-income renters. The goal is to ensure that a wide variety of demographics—including restaurant workers, teachers, artists and seniors—can live downtown and not have to own a car.
