Why solutions for Arizona’s housing crisis are facing fights
The fact that not enough housing is being built to keep up with the state’s population growth—exacerbated by burdensome regulations, NIMBYs and rising building costs—has intensified the housing crisis in Arizona. Sen. Steve Kaiser, R-Phoenix, introduced a bill to help expedite housing construction by removing bureaucratic obstacles and making it mandatory to allow things like greater density, manufactured homes, accessory dwelling units and multifamily development on commercial plots within two miles of light rail. Predictably, some are complaining the bill doesn’t specifically address affordable housing, even though any projects will increase supply and help with the crisis.
