Town After Town, Residents Are Fighting Affordable Housing In Connecticut

Opposition to large housing projects with affordable units has grown more fierce all over Connecticut as the number of proposals has increased in recent years. Many more developers are taking advantage of a law that gives them a special right of appeal if a town rejects a proposal in which at least 30 percent of the units are made affordable to households earning 60 to 80 percent of state or area median income (whichever is less). Soaring rents have made it more economically feasible for them to cover the cost of complexes, even with nearly a third of apartments below market rate.
