Median household income in Arizona is about $60,000, which means 90 percent of housing being built is affordable for only the richest 20 percent of residents. And only 5 percent of apartments are government-subsidized “affordable” housing. The cofounders of Greenlight Communities penned this opinion piece that urges “updated, inclusionary and practical” zoning regulations so that smart, efficient developers like them can provide attainable housing to the state’s middle-income residents—including first responders, health care professionals, teachers, food service employees and more—all without needing subsidies.
