Phoenix residents debate proposal that would reduce parking requirements at new apartments
Phoenix is planning to change a zoning law to allow fewer parking spaces in multifamily developments—a step that would make apartments more affordable and entice people to use public transit to help out the environment and reduce the heat island effect. For example, the city would mandate a minimum of 125 spaces for a 100-unit building rather than 150 and fewer unreserved spots. Only three of the city’s 15 village planning committees are on board so far, and several members raised issues in a series of email exchanges, but their votes aren’t binding. The city council is expected to vote on it in early September.
