The City Council recently approved $8 million in federal funding for 279 affordable apartment units across Phoenix. These units are designated for residents with disabilities, those experiencing chronic homelessness, and senior citizens. The developments include Garfield III, a 60-unit complex at 1510 E. Portland Street; Alex Apartments, a 59-unit complex at 77 E. Weldon Ave.; Osborn Pointe, a 48-unit complex at 3406 N. Third St.; Resilient Living @ Sunnyslope, a 40-unit complex at 1815 W. Sahuaro Drive; Kazan Apartments, a 72-unit complex at 2911 and 2941 N. 43rd Ave.; and Memorial Towers, 153 units at 1405 S. Seventh Ave. Income limits for residents are capped at 60% of the area median income, with 11 or more units at each location reserved for those making 40% of the area median income. These projects signify progress towards the City Council‚Äôs 2020 goal of creating or preserving 50,000 housing units by 2030 to improve home affordability. As of March’s end, the city had surpassed 40,000 affordable housing units‚ÄĒreaching 80% of the goal in just four years.
