Not in my backyard: Zoning battles are heating up — and the NIMBY crowd has emerging opposition

Changing zoning laws to spur more development is a messy issue: Most people support new housing, just not near their homes. And it doesn’t run along political lines. Moreover, new housing — particularly multifamily — benefits people who don’t yet live in a given community, so there are few supporters, while existing residents often turn out in droves to protest things like increased traffic and changing “neighborhood character.” So what’s a developer to do? Engage with people who live in the area early so there are fewer surprises later.
