How the YIMBY organization is working to pass laws to make it easier to build housing

The YIMBY—or Yes In My Back Yard—movement is the counterpart to NIMBYs, which exist to slam the door shut on new development and exacerbate the housing crisis.

In this interview, Lauren Gilger of KJZZ radio talks to M. Nolan Gray, the research director for California YIMBY, which works to get laws passed that will make it easier to build more. They discuss steps California has taken to spur housing, such as legalizing accessory dwelling units, removing high parking mandates near transit, allowing multifamily housing in commercial zones, and more, and they delve into how to provide housing for the “missing middle.” Gray also wrote the book Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It.
