Housing reform bipartisan across country, can be in Arizona

Housing reform bipartisan across country, can be in Arizona

Apartments in desert mountains “under tree”; Phoenix, Arizona

This opinion piece by Arizona Rep. Analise Ortiz and Sen. Anna Hernandez states plainly the core reason for the housing crisis: burdensome zoning laws. They say they both champion zoning law reform and urge their fellow legislators to do the same. Specifically, they mention HB2536, which would speed up zoning decisions, allow casitas and do away with design regulations. They also rally around SB1161, which would Phoenix and Tucson to allow by-right zoning for low-income housing along light rail and streetcar routes. And they trumpet SB1163, which would allow smaller lots for starter homes as well as duplexes, triplexes and manufactured homes. These leaders call out zoning laws for their racist past and urge bipartisan action, which has been done in other states, to make zoning laws fair for everyone.
