Facing a housing crisis, Arizona lawmakers propose overriding city control

This article about Senate Bills 1161 and 1163 and House Bill 2536 paints the efforts to provide more housing as mainly a Republic-led issue and only makes a brief mention that many Democratic lawmakers are on board, too. As with past articles, it summarizes the bills’ goals of tearing down barriers to building, but it uses biased language like “gutting local zoning regulations” and “allows developers to circumvent zoning regulations altogether.” This ignores the historic motivations for these laws, which are steeped in racism and classism and have led to the widespread housing crisis we face today. It also gives a disproportionate platform to the League of Cities and Towns, which is fighting against common-sense bills and trying to preserve the status quo.
