Biden Administration Turns Up Some Heat on Renter Protections
A few things are afoot on the federal level when it comes to housing that could affect the multifamily sector in myriad ways. President Joe Biden is circumventing Congress to hone in on hidden fees charged to renters. It plans to shield renters from so-called convenience fees for paying rent online and picking up trash. Also, the Department of Housing and Urban Development is dishing out $85 million to try to break down barriers to affordable housing, including “planning and policy activities” to revise zoning laws and increase density. Changes are brewing at HUD as well to lower multifamily development costs and spur more affordable housing.
