Pinal communities set to lose millions as rental taxes banned

Instead of rejoicing that tenants will get a bit of a break by not having to pay anywhere from 1 to 4 percent in taxes on their rent bills starting in 2025, Pinal County leaders are bemoaning the fact that cities are going to lose money. Casa Grande Mayor Craig McFarland, for instance, griped that state legislators “…need to stay in their lane.” Mayors claim property owners will simply raise rents to the tune of the tax that was eliminated, even though the law has provisions to prevent that. Meanwhile, leaders of cities and towns in Pinal County have issued stern warnings about potential cutbacks in services to residents while also admitting that the amounts collected are negligible in terms of their overall budgets.
