Backyard casitas gaining traction; Arizona legislators seek to take concept statewide
Arizona looks like it might be ready to loosen the reins on accessory dwelling units (ADUs), commonly called backyard casitas. SB 1415, which would prevent cities from banning them, passed committee in February and went to the Senate floor. Another bill allowing ADUS statewide, HB 2299, introduced by Rep. Lorena Austin, D-District 9, also passed committee in the House. These ADUs could function as multigenerational housing (the main reason homeowners add them) or be rented to long-term tenants. The article doesn’t mention, however, that homeowner associations can still nix them.
