 Awash in Asphalt, Cities Rethink Their Parking Needs

Spurred in part by the housing crisis, many cities and some states are reducing or doing away with mandatory minimum parking requirements for new developments that drive up costs and often aren’t even needed. Parking maximums are even coming into play: California and Oregon, for instance, put caps on parking in certain cases. Projects that didn’t pencil out prior to these changes are now sprouting up—sometimes on former parking lots. And there’s a national push by YIMBYs to crush barriers to new housing, including parking requirements.
