Arizona bill would bypass local zoning rules for housing

Arizona bill would bypass local zoning rules for housing

Important new legislation introduced by Sen. Steve Kaiser of Phoenix and approved 5-2 by the state Senate Commerce Committee would make it much easier for developers to help ease the housing crisis in Arizona. SB 1117 would eliminate many of the roadblocks that local governments enact which allow NIMBYism to thrive. Many cities and towns vehemently oppose the measure, complaining it would take away local zoning, but developers and several urban advocacy groups applaud the bill, which would help speed up projects and override many NIMBY red herrings such as traffic, crime and property values.
