The Tucson Daily Agenda: Affordable housing hits a roadblock

Building affordable housing may sound simple, but in the City of Tucson, it has been an ongoing struggle, as city officials have recently discovered. Multifamily developers report being unable to find funding for new builds that include affordable rental units. The solution? Builders have suggested paying a fee to the city that Tucson can then redirect toward subsidizing market-rate rental units. The Tucson Agenda reports that the city is “grappling with the question in at least two projects: 137-home development located at South La Cholla Boulevard and West 36ᵗʰ Street — and a student housing apartments, commercial space and parking on East 6ᵗʰ Street and North Campbell Avenue.”
