Proposal to Boost Construction of Affordable Housing Making Headway in Arizona Legislature
Arizona lawmakers, in collaboration with housing advocates and homebuilders, are close to finalizing a deal with cities to boost the construction of townhomes, duplexes, triplexes and similar homes in larger municipalities on land now set aside for single family homes. Spearheaded by Rep. Michael Carbone, the proposed legislation seeks to help young workers and families that can’t afford a traditional single-family home since prices and interest rates have surged, become potential buyers of these new, smaller units. Despite initial opposition and negotiations, the bill has garnered bipartisan support and goes to vote in the senate in May. HB2721 is one of many proposals advanced this year as lawmakers work to address housing shortage in Arizona.
