Rent Control Is a Disaster. Don’t Let It Spread Across the Nation.

Former New York Lieutenant Governor Betsy McCaughey penned this op-ed piece that shoots down rent control as a “political scam.” First off, it doesn’t just help the poor; it’s a blanket policy that pads the pocketbooks of high earners as well. Also, it often caps increases at far below the level of inflation, hitting property owners hard. In addition, those who don’t manage to fall under rent control are subsidizing those who do, because rent control suppresses supply. She advocates for vouchers instead of this “economic madness.”
