Glendale wants to loosen parking rules for affordable housing in downtown core
In a smart move that could smash at least one barrier to affordable and senior housing, Glendale could kick outrageous parking space minimums to the curb. Currently, developers are hamstrung by city rules mandating one parking space for every one-bedroom unit and studio and two spaces for units two bedrooms or larger. But this ratio is often excessive for affordable and senior residents and adds unnecessary costs to building homes for them. The city is mulling over a change that would allow it to reduce the parking requirements if certain conditions are met. Phoenix is weighing similar action and will discuss it in November.
