Could churches help solve Arizona’s housing crisis? What to know about ‘Yes in God’s Backyard’ bill

Arizona Republic

HB2815, the bill known as “Yes In God’s Backyard,” passed the state House in February 38-21 with bipartisan support. Now it needs to pass a committee hearing and then go to a full Senate floor vote. It would allow faith-based organizations to build higher-density projects by right, streamlining the path to providing more housing. Religious leaders say they see affordable housing as an “extension of the mission of the church to care for our most marginalized neighbors.” Other housing bills still in play this session include HB2720, which would allow backyard casitas in the state’s larger counties and HB2297, which would allow developers to bypass normal zoning laws in the adaptive reuse of commercial to residential.
