California Is Desperate for Affordable Housing But Can’t Stop Getting in Its Own Way
It took 17 years to build 49 units of affordable housing in Los Angeles, which today has 40,000 unhoused people. NIMBYs, convoluted approvals processes, byzantine codes, labor laws, financial issues and more were to blame for this fiasco. Thankfully, new state laws have cut through much of the red tape that slowed this project to a crawl, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and some mayors pushing to make it easier to build.
