Arizona lawmakers target local zoning rules in bid to boost affordable housing

Grace Trejo, Arizona Daily Star, File 2023
Last year’s efforts in the state legislature to put the brakes on zoning laws were stymied by the League of Cities and Towns, but this year, strong bipartisan support and more focused bills could help get new laws passed. Several bills in the state legislature aim to limit local rules that stifle new housing. One slaps down design standards, prohibits minimum lot sizes and does away with mandating homeowners associations. Another would let developers put up homes or apartments on any commercial lots. Changing outdated minimum parking requirements and allowing granny flats are also ideas gaining support.
