A historic housing construction boom may finally moderate rent hikes
The number of new housing starts in 2022 were at their highest level since the federal government starting tracking them in 1969, at 1.65 million, and are on pace to be higher this year, at 1.7 million units. Meanwhile, the cost of rent dropped in 71 of the nation’s 100 biggest cities in September. It goes to show that supply, not government regulations, is the key to providing affordable housing.
