Zoning isn’t the cause of our housing shortage. The Legislature mustn’t mess with it

This opinion piece by the Neighborhood Coalition of Greater Phoenix begins with an illogical anecdote comparing the housing crisis to seat belts and gets more confused from there. Despite mountains of hard evidence and rigorous studies that show zoning is a root cause of the housing crisis, the authors point to a “scientific random sample poll commissioned by the League of Arizona Cities and Towns” that claims only 3.5 percent of respondents “believe” zoning is the culprit. They call for opposition to HB 2536, SB 1161 and SB 1163 and a continuation of the NIMBY nonsense that will keep Arizona mired in its housing mess.
