You Can’t Solve the Homelessness Crisis Without Housing
Mass encampments in cities across the western U.S. diminish the quality of life for those who live in them and the communities around them. This is putting pressure on local leaders, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled in 2018 that cities can’t ban public camping if they don’t have enough shelter beds. The writer says the quandary of what to do with these growing numbers of unhoused people could be solved by providing services and quickly erected public housing.
