YIMBY Zoning Reform Sweeps the Mountain West
The Yes In My Back Yard (YIMBY) movement has been gaining steam in the nation’s mountain west for years now, but it’s poised for a major milestone with Arizona’s SB 1117. This bipartisan-supported bill would open the floodgates for more housing, including legalizing single-room occupancy and accessory dwelling units, paving the way for duplexes and triplexes, wiping away mandatory parking requirements, relaxing mandatory setbacks and raising height limits near transit. Interestingly, zoning reform in Arizona as well as Montana is being led by conservatives and libertarians touting starter homes and property rights, but they’re decrying similar changes made in California by progressives that yield the same results.
