VPC, city planners spar over parking space measure

VPC, city planners spar over parking space measure

Parking spaces add cost to housing — around $10,000 per open space and $35,000 to $55,000 per garage space — so Phoenix city planners want to reduce minimum requirements in order to keep rents less expensive and incentivize public transit. A poll showed that 60 percent of Maricopa County residents support the action, but nine out of 15 Village Planning Committees in the city have opposed it and only four outright support it. The Ahwatukee Village Planning Committee rejected the suggestions that developers would pass along savings or tenants would be less inclined to use cars if parking were reduced. It also argued that apartment residents would cause “chaos” by resorting to parking on neighborhood streets (which is perfectly legal). VPC votes are strictly advisory and City Council will make a final decision on Sept. 6.
