Tempe renters suffering as city’s share of affordable units tanks

Tempe has fewer affordable apartments than any other similar college town, with only 26 percent of units in reach of those making less than $63,000. In addition, only 7 percent of units in the city are available, making it even tighter for students and working people to afford to live there. That said, city officials and Mayor Corey Woods have been aware of the shortfall and have been proactive in trying to keep pace with various initiatives, including building 11,000 affordable units by 2040. But with prices for housing rising and income staying stagnant, the only solution is to build far more rental units.
