 Tariffs could have a chilling effect on home construction amid inventory crisis

Experts in homebuilding, construction and development say President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China would increase the prices of materials shipped from those countries and be passed along to consumers.

The National Association of Home Builders said as much as $13 billion worth of imported goods were used in building new multifamily and single-family housing in 2023. That works out to about 7% of all materials used in new residential construction originating from a foreign country.
