Mall redevelopment: It’s not just happening here. Around the country, malls are turning into neighborhoods thanks to the addition of multifamily housing, like a project at Stoneridge Shopping Center in the far east Bay Area enclave of Pleasanton, Calif. The city council there gave its blessing to Simon Property Group to build a six-story apartment building on six acres. It took over a decade to get housing on an underutilized surface parking lot, but this will add 360 units, including 58 below market.
