Phoenix sues Tempe to stop Arizona Coyotes development deal

Phoenix slapped Tempe with a lawsuit to try to halt a $2.1 billion deal with the Arizona Coyotes that would bring a new area, entertainment district and nearly 2,000 apartments to 46 acres of land west of Town Lake. The reason, ostensibly, was to protect future tenants from airplane noise and shield the airport from potential litigation regarding noise. However, the 1994 agreement on which Phoenix is basing its argument may include an exemption for soundproofed units, and Phoenix never objected to 400 other apartments built in high-noise corridors over the past 30 years. Tempe approved the deal with the Coyotes in December 2022 and voters were expected to say yea or nay in May, but now, the issue is up in the air again.
