Peoria, Surprise loosen ADU regulations
Peoria and Surprise joined the growing list of Valley cities to update their regulations on accessory dwelling units, making it easier for homeowners to build casitas on their properties.
Elected leaders from both cities voted Tuesday to approve ordinances that align their local ADU rules with new statewide standards meant to increase the supply of affordable housing in Arizona.
Gov. Katie Hobbs enacted House Bill 2720 in May, requiring cities with more than 75,000 residents to allow the construction of ADUs, commonly referred to as casitas or granny flats, on properties with single-family homes.
Amended regulations in Peoria and Surprise resemble those in other cities, notably Glendale, their northwest Valley neighbor that adopted its ordinance to comply with the new state law last week.
