Once the symbol of a failed land grab, Mesa’s $90M ‘gateway to downtown’ taking shape

Arizona Republic
Chicanos Por La Causa is investing $90 million to build 198 attainable apartments and 19,000 feet of local retail on a prominent corner of Mesa at Country Club Drive and Main Street. The city tried to take the land by eminent domain from owner Randy Bailey more than two decades ago to put an Ace Hardware on the site, but Bailey successfully fought it and hung onto his land. In 2015, he agreed to work on redeveloping the site, and in 2016, Mesa chose as its partner Chicanos Por La Causa. The project was delayed due to COVID-19 until recently.
