Not in my backyard: Metro Phoenix needs housing, but new apartments face angry opposition

NIMBYs are responsible for killing projects that would have provided tens of thousands of rental homes in the Valley. “The fights have slowed down an already arduous zoning and city approval process that can take Phoenix-area developers as long as four years to get an apartment complex built,” the article states. The lack of enough units to meet demand has driven prices up, and declining affordability—a major reason for the region’s economic steam—could threaten future growth. Elliott Pollack was quoted saying, “This housing shortage is the biggest economic threat I have seen in the 53 years I have been an Arizona economist. Current policies are keeping supply artificially low, and if we stay on the road we are on, the economy will die.”
