New ordinance could ban Glendale landlords from housing voucher discrimination

New ordinance could ban Glendale landlords from housing voucher discrimination

Following the lead of Tucson and Phoenix, Glendale is the latest city to consider banning property owners from considering an applicant’s source of income, including government vouchers or subsidies. Two councilmembers, Joyce Clark and Ray Malnar, are steadfastly against the idea, with Clark specifically stating, “I thought this was still a free country, so I will not support mandating landlords in how they rent their properties.” Incidentally, Glendale’s unhoused population has fallen from 406 in 2022 to 170 in 2023. Part of the reason could be more assistance and shelter beds, but the city also has seven affordable housing units in the pipeline totaling 1,306 units and waives planning and permitting fees for developers who pledge to keep properties affordable for 30 years.
