New ‘Attainable’ — Not Necessarily Affordable — Housing Coming to Downtown Phoenix

Greenlight Communities, which focuses on providing attainably priced housing without government subsidies, broke ground in late April on 208 units at 16th and Polk streets in Phoenix. Rents will start at $950 for a studio, and average rent will be $1,250—within reach for anyone earning at least $38,000 a year, such as teachers, fire fighters and the like. Phoenix Councilmember Kesha Hodge Washington, district 8, attended the groundbreaking to urge further development in order to increase supply and keep costs down, and she specifically pointed to opportunities in the “empty lots and rundown warehouses” of east Phoenix.
