Mercado project dies a second time before counci

Scottsdale city council voted 5-2 to reject a rezoning application that would’ve paved the way for 262 housing units near 92nd Street and Shea Boulevard called Mercado Courtyard (formerly known as 92 Ironwood). It would’ve provided places to live and a discount to first responders, teachers, seniors and plenty of others that Scottsdale residents rely on for their day-to-day needs. But dozens of neighbors opposed multihousing in their midst, with one arguing that apartment dwellers “water down the area” and implying that they’re not worthy of living alongside wealthy homeowners. At the same meeting, the council also yanked another apartment proposal from the agenda, though it did approve one complex in downtown Scottsdale.
