Maricopa County sees record heat and record evictions in July

Again, the media reports “record eviction filings” exceeding 7,000 for the month of July 2023 in Maricopa County, playing up the 31-day string of 110-plus temperatures as if the two are connected. However, the article also notes, “Not all eviction filings lead to a tenant being thrown out; up to one in three will be dismissed when tenants choose to pay and stay or the landlord does not pursue any court resolution….” And, against all reason and facts, tenant advocates are trying to whip up support for rent control, which has been proven in other cities to worsen the housing crisis. The article does briefly mention that rents are actually falling—though it doesn’t give credit to the increasing supply—and mentions the elimination of the rent tax, although the president of Arizona Tenants Advocates called the relief “crumbs.”
