Legislation would require housing assistance programs to prioritize Arizonans
Responding to reports that people from around the nation were competing with state residents for affordable housing via a random lottery program, Arizona leaders have introduced a bill that would make government programs give priority to locals. The legislation also would nudge municipalities to help alleviate the housing crisis. One provision would require cities of 525,000 or more to allow by-right zoning for affordable housing near transit lines if it was already slated for multifamily, commercial or mixed-use development. Another would require municipalities to publish housing needs assessments every five years. Predictably, the League of Cities and Towns opposes this forward-thinking legislation.
