 ‘It needs to happen’: Phoenix council bans housing assistance discrimination

Following in Tucson’s footsteps, Phoenix City Council voted to prevent property owners from taking into account the source of income when renting units, thus forcing them to accept tenants who receive government assistance. Despite a red herring about racism that was bandied about, owners have nothing against the renters, but they do have a beef with the tangle of strings the system requires. This law would subject landlords to the “antiquated, broken and bureaucratic” housing voucher program, according to Courtney LeVinus, CEO of the Arizona Multihousing Association.
