On a ranking of the 150 best places in the nation to live by U.S. News and World Report, Phoenix pretty much tanked at number 110. One of the major reasons? Housing affordability. By the end of 2022, only 22.5 percent of homes sold were considered affordable for buyers earning the median area income. Nationwide, roughly 42.2 percent of homes sold were affordable. Other factors included weather, crime rates, commute times, quality of education, air quality, health care availability and number of bars and restaurants per 100,000 people.
