How metro Phoenix churchgoers are fighting against NIMBYs

In direct response to NIMBYs who have blocked desperately needed affordable housing, a coalition of faith-based groups is organizing members to vociferously support development. The Valley Interfaith Project (VIP), a nonpartisan coalition of congregations and nonprofits, kept hearing from parishioners having a tough time with housing expenses and decided to help them counter the NIMBYs, who are squelching supply and keeping rents high. A big part of the problem is that NIMBYs tend to live near each other and band together to oppose a local project, while those who might support it are more loose-knit and not as vocal. VIP already managed to help get a shelter in Mesa; it now set its sights on an affordable project by Dominium in Chandler that’s been contentious.
