Hotel to Workforce Affordable Conversion Planned in PHX

A Phoenix city staff report says an adaptive re-use of a motel on Van Buren into 66 units of affordable housing fits with the general plan for the area and Gateway Transit Oriented Development District, which aims to revitalize the sagging strip. This looks bright for the developer, Arizona Housing, Inc., which must get a zoning change. This fits with a trend of hotel and motel conversions—a report from the National Association of REALTORS Research Group says this can be more “palatable to residents and approval bodies” than building multifamily on vacant land.
