Historic schoolhouse in Globe to be converted into affordable apartment units

Globe, a former mining town about 90 miles east of Phoenix with a population of roughly 7,220, is being hailed for an innovative adaptive reuse housing project with developer Gorman & Co. Historic Hill Street School will become affordable housing for those ages 55 and older, which is sorely needed because a fifth of Globe residents are over age 65 and 16 percent of them are poverty-level. The project, which began in June, received $21 million from federal and state tax credits, $2 million in funding from the Arizona Department of Housing, and additional American Rescue Act funding from the city.
