Oro Valley Town Council shot down a rezoning request that would have added 88 one-story apartments, causing the developer to rescind a companion request to build 119 apartments. More than a thousand residents signed a petition against the projects and battled them for more than two-and-a-half years, saying that the modest housing proposals didn’t fit with the neighborhood—a typical NIMBY argument. Now, they could see much taller buildings that generate more traffic on the parcel, because it’s zoned for commercial, or it might sit empty due to lack of demand.
