Apartments to be first phase of Christown shopping center redevelopment in Phoenix

First on the list of a developer’s plan to reinvigorate the ailing Christown Spectrum Shopping Center is housing. Kimco Realty, the owner, submitted plans for a 760-unit apartment complex on parking lots and the former Costco Auto Center. The entire redevelopment will take two decades or more, during which many retailers with long-term leases will stay put. But job number one is to rezone the southeast corner of the site as a “walkable urban zoning designation.” Over 2,400 total apartments are planned for the 12.5-acre site in all. The project is part of a trend to develop old malls into more vibrant areas by adding offices and housing in addition to revamping the retail spaces.
