Apartment clash prompts developer to pull rezone bid

The far East Valley lost a chance to provide 622 sorely needed housing units, including
assisted living, because Queen Creek snubbed its nose at multifamily housing. Jason
Barney withdrew his application to rezone about 36 acres from industrial to
neighborhood after city staff flung a litany of issues at him, ranging from changing the
paint color to providing additional landscaping to incorporating “window theming.” The
town says residents are not “comfortable” with a new neighborhood, but Barney claims
there was no opposition to the plan.
